What a glorious moment when, after months of darkness and cold, the magnolias suddenly bloom in spring! They mark the transition from winter to spring and bring life, fragrance, and color to the garden. Flowering trees are also valuable food sources for bees and other insects.
Depending on the tree species, the flowering period extends from the first warm days of March into early summer. Early bloomers like magnolia and plum trees flower even before their leaves emerge. Later, apple and pear trees follow with dense clouds of blossoms, while black locust and elderberry herald the arrival of early summer with their blossoms.
Are you looking for a tree with particularly beautiful blossoms? Then you'll find the best trees for that here. When choosing, however, you shouldn't just consider the color and shape of the blossoms. Flowering time, site requirements, frost sensitivity, and growth habit also play an important role. Some species bloom spectacularly, but only for a few days. Other trees impress with a longer flowering period or additional ecological benefits.
Here are our favorites for particularly attractive flowering trees:
Magnolia (Magnolia)
Flowering period: March to April
Flower color: White, Pink, Purple
The magnolia is one of the most impressive flowering trees in the world. Its large, usually chalice- or tulip-shaped blossoms appear before the leaves emerge, creating a particularly intense effect. Individual flowers can reach a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. Flowering magnolia trees sometimes resemble an explosion of blossoms.

Cherry tree (Prunus)
Flowering period: April
Flower color: White to pale pink
Ornamental and fruit cherry trees are among the most well-known flowering trees. In Japan, the cherry blossom is celebrated as a festival. While ornamental cherry trees bloom particularly profusely, sweet and sour cherry trees also produce fruit. The blossoming is intense but usually relatively short. Late frosts can affect the harvest.
You can find more information about cherry trees in the watering guide: Watering the cherry tree
Apple tree (Malus domestica)
Flowering period: April to May
Flower color: White to pink
Apple trees not only provide fruit but also produce beautiful blossoms. Their flowers appear in dense clusters and attract numerous insects. Apple trees come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and flavors.
For an apple tree to produce beautiful blossoms and a bountiful harvest, it needs a sunny location and regular pruning.
You can find more information about apple trees in the watering guide: Watering the apple tree
Pear tree (Pyrus communis)
Flowering period: April
Flower color: Pure white
Pear trees often bloom slightly earlier than apple trees and produce a multitude of white blossoms. They require a sunny, warm location. Some varieties are sensitive to late frosts. Like apple trees, pear trees also need occasional pruning to ensure consistently good yields and abundant blossoms.

Plum / Damson (Prunus domestica)
Flowering period: March to April
Flower color: White
Plums and damsons are among the earliest flowering fruit trees. Their white blossoms often appear even before the first leaves. This early flowering makes them susceptible to frost damage. A sheltered, sunny location is therefore advantageous.
You can find more information about plums in the watering guide: Watering the plum
Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum)
Flowering period: April to May
Flower color: Pink to purple
The Judas tree has an unusual characteristic: its flowers grow not only on branches but also directly on the trunk. This tree prefers warm, sheltered locations with well-drained soil.
You can find more information about the Judas tree in the watering guide: Watering the Judas tree
Rosskastanie (Aesculus hippocastanum)
Flowering period: May
Flower color: White with yellow-pink markings
The horse chestnut is impressive with its upright flower clusters, which stand like candles in the crown. It requires ample space and is therefore only suitable for larger properties or parks.
You can find more information about horse chestnuts in the watering glossary: Watering horse chestnut
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
Flowering period: May
Flower color: White
The hawthorn produces a multitude of small white blossoms in spring. It is a particularly valuable tree for native wildlife, providing food and shelter for numerous insects and birds. This tree is robust, tolerates pruning well, and is also suitable for smaller gardens, but it does have thorns.
You can find more information about hawthorn in the watering glossary: Watering hawthorn
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)
Flowering period: May to June
Flower color: Creamy white
Elderberry produces large, flat flower umbels with an intense fragrance. Its blossoms are traditionally used for syrup or jelly, and its berries are processed into juice, syrup, or jelly. It is undemanding but grows vigorously. Regular pruning keeps it compact and encourages flowering.
