Coast redwood origin

The coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is native to the Pacific coast of North America and is primarily found in northern California and southern Oregon. In the forests of its native habitat, it can reach over 100 meters. The tallest known coast redwood is also the tallest known living tree in the world, reaching 115,5 meters and bearing the name Hyperion. In Europe, the coast redwood is often cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks, botanical gardens, and large private gardens.

Coast redwood care and location

The optimal location for the coast redwood is partial shade to full sun, sheltered from wind, and with high humidity. This tree prefers cool to mild temperatures and tolerates extreme heat and drought. The soil should be deep, nutrient-rich, well-drained, and slightly acidic.

In a good location and with sufficient water supply, the coast redwood is generally easy to care for. It is resistant to pests and diseases.

For the coast redwood we recommend a mulch layer of organic material in the root zone. This mulch layer helps regulate soil moisture and temperature.

Important: If you're considering planting a coast redwood, this tree can reach a height of 20 to 40 meters in our area. So make sure you plan for enough space. If you want to control its size, you can also keep your coast redwood in a container.

Watering a coast redwood

Adequate water is crucial for the coast redwood. Especially in the first few years after planting, this tree needs regular water to develop its root system – including in fall and spring. The coast redwood requires soil moisture but cannot tolerate waterlogging.
