Red maple origin
The red maple (Acer rubrum) is native to eastern North America. It grows there in moist forests, along riverbanks, and in swampy areas. Its distribution extends from Canada in the north to Florida in the south. In Europe, it is often planted as an ornamental tree in gardens, parks, and avenues.
Red maples reach heights of up to 20 meters and form a broad, oval crown. Characteristic features include intense red flowers in early spring, red leaf stalks, and the bright red autumn color of the leaves. These are three- to five-lobed, smooth, and vibrant green in summer.
Red maple care and location
The red maple prefers sunny to partially shaded locations with fresh to moist, humus-rich, and slightly acidic soils (pH between 4,5 and 6,5). It requires permeable soil that never completely dries out. It does not tolerate heavy, calcareous, or excessively dry soils well.
- Choose a location with enough space for its broad crown.
- Young trees need regular watering.
- A layer of bark or leaves keeps the soil moist and protects the shallow roots. Red maples also thrive in urban areas because they tolerate air pollution well.
Cutting red maple
A regular Video editing is not necessary for the red maple. Only remove dead, diseased, or obstructive branches to maintain the crown. Prune preferably in late fall or winter, during the tree's dormant period. Light training pruning at a young age helps to form a stable and healthy crown structure.
Do you need to fertilize red maple?
The red maple usually does not require any additional fertilization, provided the soil is humus-rich and nutrient-rich. For nutrient-poor or depleted soils, adding some mature compost or well-rotted manure in the spring will help support growth.
Find here an mulch layer Mulch made from leaves or bark also improves soil structure, retains moisture, and prevents weed growth. Chemical fertilizers are unnecessary and should be avoided.
Water your red maple tree properly!
The red maple needs soil that is consistently moist, but not wet. Young trees, in particular, are very sensitive to drought and require regular watering during the first three to five years after planting. Water generously, especially during hot, dry summer months. It's best to water in the morning or evening so the water can penetrate deeply into the soil.
The Pour with an ordinary watering can or garden hose often leads to surface water runoff or rapid evaporation, especially on hard soils. baumbad watering bag is the perfect solution. This bag is simply placed around the trunk, zipped shut, and filled with 75 to 100 liters of water. The water seeps slowly and continuously directly into the root zone. This ensures effective, water-saving, and sustainable irrigation. Covering the soil also reduces evaporation.
For large, older trees, you can easily combine multiple bags. Attaching the watering bag is straightforward and makes watering much easier – even on hot summer days.
