How do you do it with your tree?
Especially if you are going away for a longer period of time during the summer months, it is worth finding a solution. Additional watering is particularly important in these cases:
- The younger a tree, the more important regular watering is.
- The drier and hotter it is in the last few weeks before you leave, the more important it is to water it occasionally while you are away. The tree will probably have used up some of its reserves by then.
- The longer you travel. Young trees should be watered at least once a week in summer.
- If your tree shows signs of Drought stress shows.
- Even if you have a fruit tree and want to reap a rich harvest in the fall, it can be worthwhile to provide the tree with plenty of water.
Before departure
Shortly before you leave, you can give your tree a lot of water again. It is important that you let the water drip into the soil as slowly as possible so that it can actually reach the tree and not flow away again straight away. It is best to use a hose or tree watering bag for this. If you use tree watering bags, you can also place them in the root area and not just directly on the tree trunk. The larger soil volume can absorb and store more water. It can be worthwhile to use several tree watering bags at the same time so that the root area is watered over a large area.
During your absence
During your absence you have the following options:
- Leave the tree watering bags standing
If you water with bags, you can leave them on the tree for two to three weeks. If you are going away for a long time, we recommend that you place the bags on a post in the root area. This way there will be no heat build-up on the trunk in hot weather and no mold in damp weather. It would be ideal if the bags were refilled occasionally. The bag also prevents the tree from drying out in its location. It serves as a small layer of mulch.

Upon your arrival
When you get back, take a close look at your tree. Does it show signs of Drought stress? If it shows such signs, has not been watered for a long time and it has been dry and hot, we recommend that you water your tree thoroughly.
